Jamie Vardy: 'Gareth Southgate has been brilliant'

England striker Jamie Vardy talks up the "brilliant" impact Gareth Southgate has had on the team during his four-game spell in interim charge.

England striker Jamie Vardy has seemingly backed Gareth Southgate to get the manager's job on a permanent basis.

Southgate's four-game spell in interim charge of the team came to a disappointing end this evening as his side threw away a two-goal lead from the 89th minute to draw 2-2 with Spain.

However, the former Under-21 manager did remain unbeaten during his time in charge of the senior side and is the overwhelming favourite to become Sam Allardyce's permanent successor.

"He has been brilliant. He has not changed too much but you have seen in the performance that we came with a plan. It was not to be at the end of the game," Vardy told ITV Sport.

The match also saw Vardy end a 14-game goal drought for club and country with a bullet header, and he hopes that it is the start of another purple patch.

"Finally it is over, let's hope there is more to come," he added.

Vardy has now scored five goals for England in 2016 - more than any other player in that time.
