Sports Mole picks out five of the most memorable clashes between England and Uruguay ahead of their World Cup meeting tomorrow night.

Tomorrow evening England will take on Uruguay in what has become a huge World Cup encounter for both nations.

Both lost their opening matches and another defeat in Sao Paulo will all but end their chances of reaching the knockout stages of the tournament.

The two teams have met on 10 previous occasions and here Sports Mole has picked out five of the most memorable games.

1. Uruguay 4-2 England, 1954

Champions Uruguay broke the deadlock in just the fifth minute of this World Cup encounter in Basel through Carlos Borges, but Nat Lofthouse soon restored parity. However, Obdulio Jacinto Varela and AC Milan's Juan Alberto Schiaffino scored either side of the break to put the South Americans in command. Tom Finney reduced the arrears soon after, but Javier Ambrois made sure of the outcome 13 minutes from time.

2. England 2-1 Uruguay, 1964

Johnny Byrne's international career may not have lasted too long, but initially at least he found goals easy to come by. He scored a brace against Switzerland and then backed that up with another two goals against Uruguay at Wembley. His goals arrived in the 42nd and 54th minutes, which meant that Pedro Alberto Spencer's late goal was little more than a consolation contribution.

3. England 0-0 Uruguay, 1966

England had never previously hosted the World Cup, so there was much anticipation throughout the country ahead of this opening encounter. An estimated 87,000 fans packed into Wembley, but they saw their team frustrated by a resolute Uruguayan side who appeared determined to spoil the party. Incidentally, both Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, who scored England's goals in the 4-2 win over West Germany in the final, were among the substitutes.

4. Uruguay 1-2 England, 1969

Sir Alf Ramsey's Three Lions made the trip Montevideo as champions of the world, which gave the home side an extra incentive to topple them. Francis Lee struck for the visitors early on, but that was cancelled out shortly after the restart by Luis Alberto Cubilla. It appeared that the friendly was heading for a 1-1 draw when Hurst popped up to score the winning goal in the 80th minute.

5. England 2-1 Uruguay, 2006

In preparation for the 2006 World Cup, Sven-Goran Eriksson's England took on their Uruguayan counterparts at Anfield. It seemed that a shock was on the cards when midfielder Omar Hebar Pouso gave the away side the lead with a 30-yard volley. However, Peter Crouch's first goal at senior international level drew England level, before Joe Cole struck in the last minute to secure the victory.
