England captain Steven Gerrard insists that his side's controlled, patient approach paid off after a 4-1 over Montenegro in World Cup qualifying.

England captain Steven Gerrard has declared that his side produced a superb performance under pressure against Montenegro last night to earn a vital victory.

Roy Hodgson's side were frustrated in the first half of a tense World Cup qualifier, but the floodgates opened after the break as Wayne Rooney, Andros Townsend and Daniel Sturridge all netted in a 4-1 win.

Gerrard has echoed the sentiments of Rooney by praising Hodgson's bold team selection, while insisting that a patient approach was the key to securing three precious points.

He told Sky Sports News: "We showed patience and I thought we lifted it after half-time. We knew if we kept knocking on the door, the breakthrough would come. Credit to the lads, we've done exactly what was asked of us.

"I said earlier in the week it was going to be a pressure situation. We took that on the chin, accepted the responsibility, and we produced.

"The players and manager took a bit of criticism after Ukraine and I thought his selection was very bold here. He went for three forwards and an out-and-out winger, and it paid off. Well done to him for his bravery."

The Three Lions are now one point ahead of nearest rivals Ukraine ahead of Tuesday's final round of qualifiers, which sees England host Poland while Ukraine visit San Marino.
