Wayne Rooney says that playing in midfield for England suits him after he helped the Three Lions to a 1-0 win away in Slovakia.

Wayne Rooney has said that he has "no problem" with playing in a midfield role for England after he helped the Three Lions beat Slovakia on Sunday night.

A last-gasp goal from Adam Lallana secured a 1-0 win for England in Sam Allardyce's first game in charge since replacing Roy Hodgson, but one of the main talking points of the game involved Rooney after he frequently dropped back into midfield.

Before the match, Allardyce had suggested that Rooney would play further forward, but Rooney has claimed that it was always the plan for him to play in the middle of the park alongside Eric Dier and Jordan Henderson.

The 31-year-old told ITV Sport: "That's where Sam wanted me to play. We worked on it through the week.

"Once the team was announced, a lot thought I'd play higher, but it suits me for this team, the way we play. I have no problem playing there."

After the game, Allardyce said that Rooney has the freedom to 'play where he wants' if it means getting the best out of the Manchester United skipper.
