Gareth Southgate quiet on Wayne Rooney position for England qualifier

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate refuses to reveal whether Wayne Rooney will play up front or in midfield against Malta.

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate has refused to reveal where Wayne Rooney will play on the pitch for tomorrow's World Cup qualifier against Malta.

The Three Lions captain, who has dropped out of Manchester United's first XI due to a lack of form, will start at Wembley on Saturday.

The man himself recently aired frustrations at constantly being asked by reporters about his position, the 30-year-old having played as a striker and a midfielder.

According to Sky Sports News, Rooney will play a deeper role in the England team tomorrow evening, but Southgate has neither confirmed nor denied the report.

"I am sure the full team will leak out but I don't want to give the opposition the advantage of knowing our team. It is the professional thing to do," Southgate told reporters in this evening's press conference.

"We will have more of the ball against Malta so I expect us to control the game. We will need to show patience and stick to our principles of playing. Maybe we can get an early goal. I want us to be brave, prepare to take chances."

Southgate is in temporary charge following the dismissal of Sam Allardyce, who was forced out of the job just 67 days in after being secretly filmed by The Telegraph appearing to discuss how to get around the Football Association's ban on third-party ownership of players.
