Sporting Lisbon booked themselves a place in the semi-finals of the Europa League with a 1-1 draw at Metalist Kharkiv to give them a 3-2 aggregate win.

The Ukrainians, who had a 2-1 deficit to overturn, had the best of the early possession with Taison and Cleiton Xavier coming close in the first half.

However, it was the away side that broke the deadlock, clinching a vital away goal through Ricky van Wolfswinkel one minute before the half-time whistle.

Cristaldo levelled after the break to give Metalist some hope. They had the chance to draw level on aggregate just seven minutes later when they were awarded a penalty, but Rui Patricio saved Xavier's spot kick.

The home side laid siege to the opposition's goal in the dying stages, though Sporting's defence held tight to ensure their place in the last four.

The Portuguese side will take on Athletic Bilbao, who saw off Schalke 04 in the last eight, in the semi-finals.
