Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Women's Super League clash between Everton Ladies and Chelsea Women, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

With five points separating them from the top of the Women's Super League table, Chelsea Women will look to make full use of one of their two games in hand when they travel to Merseyside for a contest with Everton Ladies.

As for the Toffees, they will be in a buoyant mood after winning their last three games in all competitions.

Match preview

Everton may have failed to live up to expectations this season, but their recent form suggests that they may end the season on a high.

After beating Aston Villa, the Toffees entered the weekend contest against Leicester City with the aim of collecting back-to-back league victories.

Jemma Purfield gave the Foxes the early advantage, however, strikes from Toni Duggan and Anna Anvegard gave Everton a 2-1 lead before Sam Tierney levelled just a minute before half time.

Seven minutes after the restart, Anvegard grabbed the only goal of the second period to give Everton just their second home league victory of the season.

As they turn their attention towards a difficult contest with the reigning WSL champions, Everton will know that a defence that has failed to keep a home league clean sheet this season will be severely tested on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are currently embroiled in an exciting two-horse title race with the Blues aiming to retain their WSL crown.

Chelsea sit five points behind the league leaders Arsenal, but Emma Hayes's side have the advantage of possessing two games in hand over their title rivals.

One of those games in hand will take place on Wednesday, and Chelsea will head to the North West in confident mood after clinching a dramatic victory over Aston Villa at the weekend.

With the encounter against the Villans drifting to a goalless conclusion, Sam Kerr latched onto a long ball forward from Zecira Musovic and the Australian sparked wild scenes of celebration at Kingsmeadow by firing the ball past Hannah Hampton in the second minute of stoppage time.

The Blues will look to extend their unbeaten league run to seven games on Wednesday, while they will also be searching for a third consecutive victory in the WSL.

Team News

After coming into the backline for Saturday's contest, Poppy Pattinson is set to retain her place in the side.

Hanna Bennison is also expected to start on Wednesday after returning to the starting lineup for the victory over Leicester.

Duggan scored just her second league goal of the season at the weekend, but the 30-year-old will hope that strike acts as a catalyst for many more before the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have doubts over the availability of Fran Kirby, Pernille Harder and Magdalena Eriksson ahead of Wednesday's contest.

They did, however, welcome back Erin Cuthbert and Jessie Fleming into the squad at the weekend, and the pair could be in line for starting places in midweek.

Having scored five goals in the last four games in all competitions, Kerr will be one of Chelsea's main goal threats for the Everton clash.

Everton Ladies possible starting lineup:
MacIver; Turner, Finnigan, George, Pattinson; Christiansen, Galli; Anvegard, Dali, Bennison; Duggan

Chelsea Women possible starting lineup:
Musovic; Carter, Bright, Nouwen, Andersson; Cuthbert, Ingle, Reiten; Ji, Fleming, Kerr

We say: Everton Ladies 1-3 Chelsea Women

Although Everton have shown signs of promise in recent weeks, we think that the defending champions will ease to a comfortable victory, which would see the Blues move to within three points of the league leaders.
