Everton boss Roberto Martinez says that he could not be prouder of his troops' never-say-die attitude after the 10-man Toffees lost 9-8 to West Ham on penalties.

Roberto Martinez has praised his "magnificent" Everton team for their efforts after losing 9-8 on penalties to West Ham United in an epic FA Cup third-round replay.

The Toffees had Aiden McGeady sent off on 56 minutes, shortly after falling behind to an Enner Valencia opener at Upton Park tonight.

However, Kevin Mirallas came on to net an equaliser with eight minutes remaining, before setting up Romelu Lukaku as Everton moved 2-1 ahead early in extra time.

They looked on course for the next round, but Carlton Cole climbed off the bench and stabbed home an equaliser on 112 minutes, while goalkeeper Adrian stroked in the winning penalty to seal a thriller.

"I thought out performance was magnificent," he told BT Sport. "We created really good opportunities.

"Probably we should have taken one or two before we scored but in terms of the performance and he character I couldn't be prouder.

"From the support that we had and the desire of the players coming on as sub to be able to play flexibly in a tactical way that allowed us to perform with great character."

The Hammers will now gear up for a fourth-round clash away to Bristol City, who beat Doncaster Rovers 2-0 in their replay tonight.
