Everton boss Roberto Martinez has revealed that he was pleased with Darron Gibson's comeback from injury during Tuesday's defeat to Fulham in the Capital One Cup.
The midfielder played his first competitive match of the season at Craven Cottage as the Toffees were beaten 2-1 in the third round.
"I thought that for Darron Gibson, after being away, it was important that he got some playing time," Martinez told the club's official website.
"We need that competition and that knowhow, and Darron is a vital player for us. It was great to see him get through that amount of time. It will be very beneficial for him."
Everton return to Premier League duties on Monday when they face Newcastle United at St James' Park.
