Everton manager David Moyes says that everyone in the Premier League should take a 20 per cent pay cut to get finances "back on an even keel".

Everton manager David Moyes believes that everyone in the Premier League should take a 20 per cent pay cut.

The Scot said that finances in football have spiralled out of control and that the knock-on effect is alienating the public.

Moyes also believes that stricter rules should be in place to ensure that chairmen manage their balance sheets correctly and do not overspend.

"Everyone in the Premier League should take a 20% pay cut to put football finances back on an even keel and allow a significant reduction in ticket prices to make football more affordable for the ordinary fan," said the 48-year-old.

"People might say it'd be harder to attract players but we have to take responsibility for the long-term health of football.

"Clubs have to control their money properly and only pay what they can actually afford. People have to be held responsible when things go wrong. Every family in the country at the moment has to finance correctly. They can't overspend. Why is football different?"

Moyes is currently the second-longest reigning manager in the Premier League, having taken over the Toffees in 2002.
