Once again David Moyes has guided Everton to a more than respectable finish in the Premier League on a restricted budget.

When the purse strings were loosened slightly during the January transfer window, the arrival of Nikica Jelavic from Rangers proved to be a masterstroke.

Here, Sports Mole brings you a season review for the blue half of Merseyside.

August

While many began the season on Saturday, August 13, Everton were made to wait an extra week because the riots in London had caused significant damage to the streets surrounding the ground of their opponents Tottenham Hotspur.

That meant the Toffees started a week later, although they may have wished they hadn't! Recently-promoted Queens Park Rangers claimed maximum points at Goodison Park courtesy of a single strike from Tommy Smith.

Moyes's side recovered with wins over Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United in the Carling Cup.

September

September began with a 2-2 draw at home to Aston Villa, before Wigan Athletic were brushed aside by three goals to one.

The other match in September dealt Everton a trip to Manchester City, who continued their good form with a 2-1 win over the Toffees.

Everton were still taking the Carling Cup seriously and progressed through to round three courtesy of a 2-1 win over fellow Premier League side West Bromwich Albion.

October

Rivals Liverpool, as well as Chelsea and Manchester United, all took maximum points against Everton in October, with the only positive result being achieved by a 3-1 win at Fulham.

Chelsea also returned to haunt Everton in the Carling Cup, winning through to the next round thanks to a 2-1 victory.

November

The poor form continued at the start of November when the Toffees lost 2-1 away at Newcastle United.

However, successive victories over Wolves and Bolton Wanderers lifted the gloom that had descended upon Goodison Park.

December

Defeats by a single goal to Stoke City and Arsenal got December off to a poor start.

The rot was eventually stopped courtesy of a 1-1 draw against Norwich City, before a 1-0 victory over Swansea City on the Wednesday before Christmas.

Leighton Baines notched a penalty on Boxing Day to claim a share of the spoils for Everton from their festive trip to Sunderland.

January

Premier League draws against Aston Villa and Blackburn were accompanied by losses to Spurs and Bolton at the beginning of 2012.

That was all forgotten on the final day of the month though as January signing Darron Gibson scored the only goal of the game to hand the Toffees all three points against title-chasing Man City.

Away from the league Tamworth and Fulham were defeated in the FA Cup as Everton advanced into round five.

Moyes was also active in the transfer market, bringing in Jelavic and Steven Pienaar to join the recently-recruited Gibson from Man United.

February

A 1-1 draw against Wigan and a 2-0 victory at home against Chelsea marked Everton's only two games in the Premier League in February.

FA Cup progression also continued as Championship side Blackpool were defeated 2-0 at Goodison Park.

March

March was the month where Jelavic began to repay some of his transfer fee. The Croatian striker scored in victories over Spurs, Swansea and Sunderland in the FA Cup.

However, Everton supporters were left disappointed after a hat-trick from Steven Gerrard completed a league double for Liverpool over their Merseyside rivals.

April

Jelavic was among the goals again during a 2-2 draw with Norwich and a 4-0 win over Sunderland at the start of April.

He also opened the scoring during the FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool. The day would end sourly for blue supporters dreaming of revenge though as goals from Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll booked Liverpool's place in the final.

Everton responded by scoring eight goals in their next two matches thanks to a 4-4 draw at Man United and a 4-0 win over Fulham.

May

May proved not to be quite as exciting as the previous two months, beginning with draws against Stoke and relegated Wolves. However a final-day thrashing of Champions League-chasing Newcastle ensured a seventh-place finish, four points clear of their Merseyside rivals.
