Everton centre-back Phil Jagielka: 'Newcastle United match will be tough'

Everton defender Phil Jagielka admits that getting the better of Newcastle United even at home on Monday will be "tough".

Everton defender Phil Jagielka has admitted that winning against Newcastle United on Monday will be tough.

The Toffees will host Alan Pardew's side at Goodison Park in their fourth Premier League game of the season.

"[Papiss] Cisse took all the plaudits when he arrived with the goals he scored," he told the club's official website. "Demba Ba led the way before he came so it was two great signings for them.

"They have plenty of creativity in the midfield as well so it is going to be a tough game. It is definitely a challenge we look forward to.

"You don't want to play against people who aren't expected to score but who then do so – it makes you look bad."

Jagielka added that he is confident that he and his fellow defenders will be able to keep the Newcastle attacking players in check.

"So you want to be playing against these guys who are expected to score goals for fun because of you stop them it breeds confidence," said the 30-year-old.

"Myself and the rest of the defenders prefer to play against those who everyone has come to watch. Hopefully we will stop them playing well."

Everton have picked up six points from three league games so far.
