Everton manager Roberto Martinez believes that a review needs to be carried out on the rules regarding sending-offs involving goalscoring opportunities.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez believes that the football authorities need to review the current rules regarding sending-offs involving goalscoring opportunities.

Questions have been asked following last night's Champions League round-of-16 tie between Arsenal and Bayern Munich, which ended 2-0 in the German side's favour.

The main talking point after the match was when Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was given a straight red card in the first half for contact on Arjen Robben, who was awarded a penalty, which was missed.

When Martinez was probed on the issue in today's press conference, the Spaniard said: "At the moment, if you follow the rules, it's a red card and a penalty, but the law is harsh. It takes a lot out of the team and maybe it needs reviewing.

"I always felt that is double punishment. It's a very harsh rule. I was at the game, but it was difficult to see if Robben was going to get the ball. It was very difficult for the referee, but I felt it was too much of a punishment."

The Gunners will try to overturn the deficit in the second leg at the Allianz Arena next month.
