Sebastian Bassong heads an injury-time equaliser to snatch Norwich City a point at Everton.

Sebastian Bassong headed home an injury-time equaliser for Norwich City at Everton this afternoon.

Everton started brightly and came close to taking an instant lead when Leon Osman watched his left-footed curler go just wide.

The Toffees were soon ahead, however, when Bryan Oviedo, who replaced the suspended Marouane Fellaini in the starting lineup, beat his man down the left and squared for Steven Naismith to smash home first time.

The hosts almost doubled their lead when first Leighton Baines saw his shot kept out by John Ruddy before Leon Osman could only fire the rebound into the turf and over.

Norwich's best chances of the opening 45 came when Grant Holt outmuscled defenders but could only screw wide before Sebastian Bassong headed a free header wide.

Norwich began the second half the way they ended the first and came close to equalising near the hour mark when first Anthony Pilkington saw a long-range shot beaten out by Tim Howard before Holt was just denied a simple finish by the American stopper.

The Canaries continued to look the more dangerous and had it not been for Jonny Heitinga they would have equalised as the Dutch defender cleared Robert Snodgrass's effort off the line.

Up the other end Baines forced Ruddy into action after surging past the Norwich defence.

Former Toffee Ruddy then had to go off because of injury but Everton couldn't test substitute Mark Bunn. In fact, it was Norwich who got the second in the dying moments.

Snodgrass's deep free kick was met by Bassong and it went in off the underside of the bar, with Grant Holt poking home even though the ball had gone over the line.

Both sides remain where they started the day in the Premier League, with Everton fifth and Norwich 13th.
