Two goals in second-half stoppage time have seen Everton come from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 this afternoon.

The hosts broke through the opposition defence in the ninth minute as Nikica Jelavic raced through on goal, but keeper Hugo Lloris was quick off his line to beat the Croatian striker to the ball.

Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini combined for the Toffees five minutes before the break, setting up a chance for Leon Osman, but his shot from a tight angle failed to find the target.

Everton continued to push for an opening goal in the second half, and Steven Naismith came close to providing it just three minutes after the restart. Baines's initial free kick was blocked, before his follow-up shot was turned just wide by the Scot.

Tim Howard was forced into his first save of the match in the 56th minute as Jan Vertonghen's well struck free kick was goalbound, but the Everton keeper was equal to it.

Baines set up another chance for the hosts with just over 20 minutes left, but Osman lifted his shot over the bar having been found by the England international.

Despite Everton enjoying the lion's share of chances throughout the match, Spurs took the lead with just under 15 minutes remaining when Clint Dempsey's strike from the edge of the box deflected off the boot of Sylvain Distin and over Howard.

Spurs almost doubled their lead five minutes from time as Gylfi Sigurdsson found space outside the box, only to see his effort bounce back off the crossbar.

The Toffees grabbed a late equaliser in the 91st minute as Naismith found Seamus Coleman, who in turn found Steven Pienaar, who nodded it past Lloris.

Everton completed their dramatic turnaround just a minute later when another Coleman cross was nodded on by Vellios to Jelavic, who turned it in to give his side the unlikely win.
