Everton have reportedly taken a step back in their pursuit of Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes as they wait for clarification over what will happen with this summer's transfer window.
The normal structure of a football season has been thrown into disarray due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has forced the stoppage of action almost everywhere in the world and leaves the 2019-20 campaign in doubt.
Should the current season be completed then it is almost certain to happen during the summer months, raising further questions over whether the transfer window will still open as planned.
Everton are understood to have everything in place to sign Gabriel from Lille, but the Liverpool Echo reports that they are holding back on confirmation of the deal due to the uncertainty surrounding the summer window.
The 22-year-old is thought to be available for around €30m (£27m), and Everton are understood to be clear front-runners for his signature despite interest from elsewhere in the Premier League and Serie A.
Gabriel has made 34 appearances for Lille across all competitions this season, including featuring in all six of their Champions League group games.
