Roberto Martinez: 'Everton won't sign big names for sake of it'

Everton manager Roberto Martinez insists that his side will not sign big names "for the sake of it" before the end of the transfer window.

Roberto Martinez has insisted that he will not sign big-name players "for the sake of it" if it will not help Everton in the long term.

The Toffees have signed just three players since the transfer window opened, including former Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley on a free, spending a total of £4.4m.

"We know we need to bring a couple of new faces in but I am very much aware that they need to be players who improve or help the players we already have at the club," the manager is quotes as saying by the Liverpool Echo.

"It is not just a case of bringing in names and players for the sake of it. That is something that sounds great for 24 hours but it doesn't help in the next 10 months.

"To play for Everton they have to come and fit in well with what we want to do and the football club they have to represent and making sure we add to our squad which is getting stronger."

Everton had been linked with Inter Milan midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, but the Swiss international signed for Stoke City this afternoon.
