Groningen ended their five-game winless run in the Eredivisie with a 2-0 triumph at home to strugglers Dordrecht.
The first goal of the game arrived one minute before half time when Albert Rusnak capped a counter-attack by turning in the box and firing into the bottom corner.
Chances were few and far between during what was a cagey second half, but the hosts had a good opportunity to double their lead with 20 minutes left as Tjaronn Chery lined up a free kick, only to shoot well off target.
Groningen looked the more likely to score during the final moments as Filip Kurto denied Hans Hateboer with a fine save.
However, the home side managed to extend their lead in stoppage time as Chery made up for his earlier miss by surging into the box before curling the ball past Kurto.
