Groningen held 10-man Feyenoord to a 1-1 draw in Sunday's Eredivisie clash at Euroborg.
The home side were quickest out of the starting blocks as they threatened with a long-range drive from Maikel Kieftenbeld, a Tjaronn Chery near-post shot that was saved by Kenneth Vermeer and Mimoun Mahi's effort.
Despite Groningen's intent, the visitors would go on to take the lead against the run of play just before the half-hour mark. An attack was not properly cleared and Jordy Clasie scored from the rebound.
Chery was responsible for getting his side back into the game on the stroke of half time, curling a free kick over the wall and into the net from 30 yards out.
There would be no further goals in the game as both sides ground out a draw, although former Chelsea player Khalid Boulahrouz was sent off in the 90th minute for clashing with Rasmus Lindgren.
