Hamburger SV have beaten FC Koln in their DFB Pokal third-round match.
Adam Matuschyk struck a left-footed shot from outside the box early on, but Rene Adler did well to save.
Tolgay Arslan then found Hakan Calhanoglu, who drove his shot toward the bottom corner, but Timo Horn was there to keep it out.
Matuschyk again forced Adler to save as the half reached the 30-minute mark.
However, it was the home side who opened the scoring when Maximilian Beister connected with Marcell Jansen's cross to send the ball into the bottom corner.
The hosts came out strong at the start of the second half, but were soon pegged back. Koln broke and the ball fell to Matuschyk, who found the net from the centre of the box.
Patrick Helmes then hit the bar for the visitors five minutes later.
Arslan and Jansen both missed chances for Bert van Marwijk's side, but they got the winning goal with six minutes remaining as Ivo Ilicevic slotted the ball in for 2-1.
