Huddersfield Town have recorded a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United to ensure that Reading become the final team to be relegated from the Championship.
As a result of their excellent 2-1 win away at Cardiff City on Sunday, the Terriers were left requiring just one point from their final two fixtures to remain in the second tier.
Reading, of all teams, are the visitors to the John Smith's Stadium on Monday, and defeat for Neil Warnock's side versus his former club Sheffield United would have left the Royals a win away from survival.
However, Huddersfield were able to seal yet another impressive triumph under Warnock as Danny Ward scored the only goal of the game just before the hour mark.
The 32-year-old's strike, his fifth of the campaign, was one of Huddersfield's goals of the season, the forward curling a delightful shot into the far corner of Wes Foderingham's net from the edge of the area.
To the credit of the already-promoted visitors, they continued to press during the latter stages, motivated by the Yorkshire rivalry shared by the two clubs.
Nevertheless, Huddersfield were able to hang on, sparking jubilant scenes among the home supporters as they celebrated survival during a season where most of it has been spent in the bottom three.
Not only have Huddersfield guaranteed Championship football for 2023-24, they now sit in 18th place in the table, six points clear of Reading in 22nd spot. body check tags ::
