Hull City have questioned claims from Sheffield United that a fee has been agreed for defender Harry Maguire.
United managing director Mal Brannigan said on Monday morning that Hull's latest bid for the 21-year-old had been "reluctantly accepted" by the League One club.
However, Hull have now claimed that their most recent offer, which was made last week, was rejected by the Blades at the time.
"Sheffield United rejected an offer from the club five days ago (Wednesday) for defender Harry Maguire. This was the club's final offer and we have since entered into discussions with other transfer targets," read an official statement.
"In light of Sheffield United's statement this morning the board will meet with manager Steve Bruce this afternoon to determine whether we now wish to pursue the transfer after the South Yorkshire club's apparent U-turn."
It is understood that Hull's most recent offer for Maguire was around £2m.
