Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy revels in his side's 1-0 victory over Birmingham City.

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has praised his team following their 1-0 victory over Birmingham City in the Championship today.

An early DJ Campbell strike gave the Tractor Boys their first win in 13 games to get the former Wolves boss's tenure at the club off to the perfect start.

"You couldn't have asked for much better than first game getting a win and ending a losing streak for the club, and a losing streak for me," Sky Sports News quotes McCarthy as saying.

"My last game was a defeat [as Wolves boss in February] and I didn't want to start with one.

"I thought the players gave everything. We had some blocks, there was a great save at the end. I thought their goalkeeper made a great save from Danny Higginbotham."

McCarthy went on to say that he still gave his players a lecture after the game over their standing at the bottom of the Championship table.

"Afterwards I went to give the players a pat on the back but I gave them my usual caustic soda," he added.

"I just said to them you should be embarrassed that you're bottom of the league. If they'd have worked like that, played like that and blocked things like that then I wouldn't even be in the job."

The win see Ipswich move to within a point of 23rd-placed Bristol City and four from the right side of the drop zone.
