Mick McCarthy will stand down as Ipswich Town boss at the end of the season following the expiration of his contract.

Mick McCarthy will stand down as Ipswich Town boss at the end of the season following the expiration of his contract.

McCarthy is currently the longest-serving manager in the Championship, having joined the club in 2012.

The 59-year-old led the Tractor Boys to the playoffs in the 2014-15 season, while the club currently sit 12th in the Championship table this term.

"Club owner Marcus Evans and Mick McCarthy have agreed that the Town boss will leave Portman Road at the end of his contract," read a statement on Ipswich's official website.

"The two met on Wednesday night and decided the move was in the best interest of all parties. Mick will see out his contract and so will stay in charge for the remainder of Blues' fixtures over the 2017-18 campaign. Assistant manager Terry Connor will also leave the club at the end of his contract."

McCarthy added: "I had a good discussion with Marcus and we feel this is the right thing to do for me and for Ipswich Town.

"I have loved my time here and I am proud of what I have achieved over the last six years - and the relationship I have enjoyed with the players and all the staff at the club in that time.

"I won't be leaving with any regrets. I have given everything for Ipswich Town and I will see out my contract in the same way."

Ipswich will return to Championship action away to Birmingham City this weekend.
