Giuseppe Rossi has been the subject of online abuse from fans of the United States national team.
The 25-year-old, born and raised in the US, came under fire on social networking site Twitter for his decision to instead represent Italy – the country of his parents' birth – on the international stage after the teams met in midweek.
The Villarreal striker was called 'a disgrace to all Americans' and told that he would have his teeth 'knocked out' if he met a fan in person.
Rossi is currently facing half a year on the sidelines after tearing his knee ligaments in October.
