Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Women's World Cup clash between Jamaica Women and Brazil Women, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Jamaica Women and Brazil Women will both be looking to secure a place in the last 16 of the Women's World Cup 2023 when they face off in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Brazil head into the final group game in third position, with one point separating them from the Reggae Girlz, who currently occupy second place.

Match preview

After losing all three games at their only previous appearance at the Women's World Cup in 2019, Jamaica have managed to experience better fortunes this time around.

They picked up a hard-earned point in their first game, as they held France to a goalless draw, before turning their focus to Saturday's meeting with Panama.

The Reggae Girlz had to be patient in search of the opening goal, and their persistence was rewarded in the 56th minute when Allyson Swaby headed home from Trudi Carter's cross.

Having picked up four points from their opening two games, Jamaica have the chance to pull off a major upset and knock out Brazil.

They will advance to the last 16 if they avoid defeat against the South Americans, while a loss would require France to suffer an unlikely defeat to Panama by a greater amount of goals.

Brazil still have considerable work to do if they are to progress from the group stage for a seventh consecutive Women's World Cup.

After kicking off the tournament with a commanding 4-0 win over Panama, the Selecao looked set to take a point from Saturday's meeting with France when Debinha cancelled out Eugenie Le Sommer's opener.

However, they were punished for failing to mark Wendie Renard from a corner kick, presenting the defender with the chance to nod home the winning goal in the 83rd minute.

Brazil will have to pick themselves for Wednesday's contest, as they prepare to face Jamaica for the first time since easing to a 3-0 win in the group stage of the 2019 Women's World Cup.

The South Americans will advance to the last 16 with a win, but a draw will only be enough if France lose to Panama.

Team News

Jamaica's star striker Khadija Shaw missed the win over Panama through suspension, but she will return to lead the line against Brazil.

After scoring the winning goal on Saturday, Allyson Swaby's main priority will be on her defensive duties when she lines up in the centre of defence alongside her sister Chantelle Swaby.

Cheyna Matthews, who plays her club football for Chicago Red Stars, could be recalled to the side after dropping out of the starting lineup on Matchday Two.

As for Brazil, Pia Sundhage could opt for consistency and name an unchanged side despite being edged out by France on Matchday Two.

Rafaelle will feature in central defence alongside Lauren Costa, while Adriana and Tamires are expected to operate as the two full-backs.

Debinha scored her first Women's World Cup goal on Saturday, and she will be looking to find the net once again when she features up front alongside Barcelona's Geyse.

Jamaica Women possible starting lineup:
Spencer; Cameron, A. Swaby. C. Swaby, Blackwood; Matthews, Spence, Sampson, Brown; Primus, Shaw

Brazil Women possible starting lineup:
Lele; Antonia, Rafaelle, Costa, Tamires; Borges, Kerolin, Bertolucci, Adriana; Debinha, Geyse

We say: Jamaica Women 0-2 Brazil Women

Jamaica will be proud of their efforts in the opening two games, and they will be determined to produce another memorable performance to progress from a difficult group.

However, Brazil will be motivated to bounce back from Saturday's defeat, and we think that they will utilise their quality and World Cup experience to claim all three points.
