Juventus's reward for winning the 1995-96 instalment of the Champions League was a European Super Cup encounter with French side Paris Saint-Germain.

The Italian outfit qualified by virtue of their penalty shootout success over Ajax in Rome during the previous May, while PSG saw off Rapid Vienna in the final of the Cup Winners' Cup.

Juventus were regarded as the slight favourites ahead of the first leg in Paris 17 years ago today, but the home side were predicted to put up a stern challenge, what with being able to call upon the likes Bernard Lama, Didier Domi, Paul Le Guen, Bruno N'Gotty and Patrice Loko, as well as Brazilian internationals Leonardo and Rai.

However, after just 45 minutes, the destination of the trophy was effectively decided. Juventus ran riot during the first half as Michele Padovano's brace was accompanied by goals scored by Sergio Porrini and Ciro Ferrara.

World Cup winner Rai restored some hope for the hosts when he converted a penalty eight minutes after the restart, but any slim hope that PSG had was eradicated in the 64th minute when Laurent Fournier was red-carded.

The Old Lady went on to make their numerical advantage count as future Crystal Palace midfielder Attilio Lombardo came off the bench to fire in a fifth from inside the penalty area, before another substitute, Nicola Amoruso, completed the rout with one minute left to play.

In the return leg a fortnight later, Alessandro Del Piero and Christian Vieri were among the goals as Juve won 3-1, which sealed a 9-2 aggregate victory.
