Lazio defender Modibo Diakite would be "honoured" by an approach from Sunderland, according to his agent.
The 26-year-old, whose contract runs out at the end of the season, has fallen out of favour at the Stadio Olimpico.
He nearly completed a move to Napoli last month, only for the deal to collapse once terms were agreed.
Ulisse Savini said that, as yet, there has been no contact from the Black Cats, but hinted that working under Paolo Di Canio would be an interesting proposition.
"English football is intriguing and Di Canio has brought great enthusiasm, but for now I haven't spoken to anyone from Sunderland," Savini told lalaziosiamonoi.
"If they were to call, we'd be honoured to talk to them."
Everton and Liverpool have also been linked with the Frenchman.
