Leicester lead going into the break against Reading after David Nugent scored his eighth penalty of the season.
The opening exchanges provided little by way of incident, with the failure of the stadium's floodlight system being the game's only talking point early on.
Leicester, however, won a penalty after Shaun Cummings was adjudged to have fouled Anthony Knockaert. David Nugent subsequently stepped up to slot home past Alex McCarthy.
Nugent continued to threaten and clipped the post after Wes Morgan kept Knockaert's free kick alive.
