Leicester City reportedly express an interest in signing Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who is backed at the Magpies after a failed loan spell at Manchester United.

Leicester City have reportedly identified Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka as a potential January transfer target.

During the summer window, Newcastle allowed former first-choice Dubravka to move to Manchester United on a season-long loan deal.

However, rather than earn regular minutes in cup competitions with the Red Devils, the 33-year-old was limited to just two EFL Cup outings, not featuring in the Europa League.

While the Slovakian stopper had been expected to remain at Old Trafford, his parent club instead made the decision to recall him on January 1.

As it stands, it is perceived that Dubravka may provide more competition for Nick Pope, but Newcastle are already well-stocked for alternatives to the England international.

Karl Darlow, Mark Gillespie and Loris Karius are all in reserve, theoretically leaving Newcastle in a position where they will look to reduce those numbers in January.

Dubravka was promoted ahead of that trio for the game with Arsenal on Tuesday, being named as a substitute, and Eddie Howe revealed ahead of that fixture that Dubravka had requested to end his time at Man United.

According to the Daily Mail, Leicester are now interested in negotiating a deal for Dubravka over the coming days.

Since the departure of Kasper Schmeichel in the summer, Danny Ward has grown into the role as number one at the King Power Stadium, making 18 starts in the Premier League.

However, despite keeping six clean sheets in the top flight during 2022-23, doubts remain over whether the Wales international will remain first choice in the long term.

Understudy Daniel Iversen has been given just two starts in the EFL Cup, but did not play in the recent 3-0 success at MK Dons in the fourth round.

With Dubravka still possessing a contract at St James' Park until 2025, Newcastle may insist on receiving a notable fee should they agreed to sell a player who has made 130 appearances in their colours.

The North East outfit are also keen to boost their position with FFP, something which may hinder future pursuits in the transfer market due to their outlays 12 months ago and in the summer. body check tags ::
