Josh Brownhill struck on the verge of half time to give Preston North End the lead over Liverpool at Deepdale this afternoon.
The midfielder reacted quickest to prod home from a yard out after Joe Garner's bicycle kick was saved by Brad Jones.
The goal was nothing more than the League One side deserved after outplaying their Premier League opposition for much of the first half.
Garner tested Jones as early as the sixth minute with a vicious strike from 20 yards that the Australian goalkeeper tipped over the bar.
Preston went close again on 13 minutes when Neil Kilkenny's strike was deflected over by Andre Wisdom.
Liverpool's only real chance of note came when Rickie Lambert played in Jordan Ibe, who had come on as an early replacement for Emre Can, but Ibe could only fire wide from 10 yards.
