Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk has expressed his remorse after a tackle on Liverpool's Harvey Elliott left the teenager with a dislocated ankle.
The 22-year-old was initially brought onto the field as a replacement for Diego Llorente in the first half of the encounter before seeing red on the hour mark following a horror challenge on Elliott.
The Liverpool man left the field on a stretcher and is now reportedly set for surgery on the dislocated ankle later this week, while Struijk has sent a message to the stricken 18-year-old on social media.
Struijk wrote on an Instagram story: "In today's game something happened that I would never wish on anyone. Harvey Elliott, my thoughts are with you.
"I'm gutted and never meant for this to happen. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you back on the pitch soon."
Elliott's start against Leeds was his third in a row in the Premier League, as goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Fabinho ultimately propelled the Reds to a comfortable 3-0 win.
