Three potential League Cup upsets

Ahead of the tonight and tomorrow's League Cup matches, Sports Mole picks out three potential ties that could end in shock results.

In the second round of this season's League Cup, MK Dons pulled off one of the competitions's biggest ever shocks by recording a 4-0 victory over four-time winners Manchester United.

Over the next two days, the 32 remaining sides will meet in the third round and here, Sports Mole has picked out three ties which could end with a surprising result.

1. Shrewsbury Town vs. Norwich City

Neil Adams may not have been the number one choice to manage Norwich where some fans were concerned, but the job that he has carried out in the Championship so far should be lauded. The Canaries are second, having lost just once. With promotion back to the Premier League the club's number one aim, the League Cup certainly will not be a major priority for Adams.

As a result, it could be an experimental Norwich starting lineup that takes to the field at New Meadow. The Shrews, who are currently a League Two side, also have promotion aspirations of their own, but unlike Norwich, they do not have an overly big squad to select from. It should mean that in front of a home crowd, Micky Mellon will pick the strongest side available to him. Shrewsbury have won four and drawn one of their five home matches this term, conceding just one goal.

2. Liverpool vs. Middlesbrough

Back in the Champions League following a five-year exile, the Capital One Cup has lost some significance to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers. Realistically, it provides Rodgers with his best chance, along with the FA Cup, of winning his first trophy as manager of the Reds. Being in Europe's top competition, though, is vitally important to the club, financially more than anything else.

Without the influence of Luis Suarez and the injured Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool have struggled to create chances in recent Premier League outings. Rodgers will shuffle his pack against visiting Boro, which will bring together a mixture of rusty squad players and untried youngsters. Championship side Boro have won their last three matches, so they should be full of confidence heading to Anfield.

3. Burton Albion vs. Brighton & Hove Albion

Despite the disappointment of losing out in the playoffs at Wembley last season, Burton appear to have regrouped and gone again. They are second in League Two and have a 100% winning record from their four home encounters, as well as victories over Wigan Athletic and Queens Park Rangers in the League Cup.

Meanwhile, Burton's opponents Brighton are struggling for form under the management of former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia. They make the trip to Staffordshire having failed to win any of their last four Championship matches, with just one away victory to their name all season.
