Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has suggested that the club had to sack Brendan Rodgers because results had not been good enough.

Rodgers was relieved of his duties after winning just one of his last six fixtures in charge, and Aldridge believes that a club of Liverpool's stature should be doing much better.

"I thought Brendan was going to be given a bit more time to try and turn it round. But you move on, that's what football's all about, it's a results business," Aldridge told Sky Sports News.

"Liverpool have got a massive big stand next year to fill with nearly 10,000 more seats, and they've got to get the feel-good factor within the club which we haven't had for a while now, and maybe that might have tipped the balance with the owners.

"With the size of the club we need to be up there, we need to be challenging - not just to get in the top four, but challenging for trophies and for Premierships and European Cups - and over the last three years, we had a little stint in the Champions League and it didn't last very long, but that should be happening year in year out."

Liverpool are currently 10th in the Premier League table, with 12 points from their first eight matches.
