Former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli has responded negatively to Greg Dyke's comments about the number of foreign players in the Premier League.

The chairman of the Football Association has called for top clubs to become less reliant on imported talent, as he believes that the lack of home-grown players in the top flight is damaging the progress of England's national side.

"Everybody is pointing fingers at the Premier League because they do not want to look at their own failures," Comolli told The People. "I thought Greg Dyke's speech was very poor. The FA needs to produce better quality coaches, and more of them.

"Roy Hodgson will be feeling very frustrated - any manager in his shoes would be. It is not a good thing that there are no English players in the Premier League, but people are not looking at the right reasons for them not being there. Instead of blaming the Premier League, they need to work with them."

Since winning the World Cup in 1966, England have only reached the semi-final stages once - in 1990.
