Liverpool have announced that Darwin Nunez will wear the club's number nine shirt for the 2023-24 season.
The iconic striker's jersey was most recently donned by Roberto Firmino, who has since bid farewell to the Reds on a free transfer to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli.
Nunez was bestowed with the '27' upon his arrival from Benfica last summer, but with Firmino swapping Merseyside for the Middle East, Nunez will lead the line as Liverpool's number nine next term.
Liverpool also confirmed that fans who have already purchased a Nunez shirt with the number 27 on the back will be personally reimbursed by the 24-year-old with a number nine jersey, as was the case with Luis Diaz when the Colombian attacker switched to number seven.
Nunez will sport the '9' after donning that jersey during his two seasons with Benfica, while he also wore the same shirt for Uruguay's Under-20s before swapping to the '11' at senior level.
As well as Firmino, Nunez follows in the footsteps of Ian Rush, Fernando Torres and Robbie Fowler - all of whom previously wore the number nine shirt for Liverpool - while less successful forwards in Andy Carroll, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Iago Aspas have also been in possession of the jersey down the years.
Nunez endured a mixed debut campaign with Liverpool following his arrival from Benfica for an initial £64m, scoring 15 goals and setting up four more in 42 games across all tournaments. body check tags ::
