Liverpool and England winger Stewart Downing has claimed that confidence is high in the England camp ahead of their Euro 2012 opener against France on June 11.
England go into the tournament amidst speculation of a lack of squad harmony and still being questioned over the omission of Rio Ferdinand, leading to fans generally having low expectations.
However, goalkeeper Joe Hart has insisted that the team believe they can go far in the tournament, and Downing has echoed these claims, saying that the 23-man squad have plenty of confidence in their own ability.
"We're confident we can get a result [against France]. We don't fear them. We know they are a good team but so are we. We know their strength and weaknesses," said Downing.
"The World Cup in 2006 was very exciting, so I understand what the young lads will be going through. If they need to speak to me or any of the other experienced lads I'm here to lend a hand.
"Whoever the manager picks we just get on it with, if I am picked I will just concentrate on my role in the team and get on with it."
Downing, 27, made his debut for England against Holland in 2005 and has since won 34 caps for his country.
