Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard: 'I can still be an attacking threat'

Steven Gerrard insists that he can still pose an attacking threat, despite adapting his game to a more defensive midfield role.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has insisted that he can still push forward in attack, despite not being "21 anymore".

The 33-year-old has adapted to a more defensive midfield role in recent seasons, but the England skipper has insisted that playing in a 3-4-1-2 system allows him to go on attacking runs.

"I can get forward slightly more in this formation knowing that I have got three defenders behind me," the Liverpool Echo quotes Gerrard as saying.

"In general, whether the system changed or not, I have spoken to Brendan [Rodgers] and he wants me to pick and choose my runs.

"Everybody understands that I'm not 21 anymore where I can burst into the box at every opportunity. With experience, I hope I can pick the right times for those bursts. I'm not going to become an out-and-out holding midfielder just yet."

Gerrard scored his 100th goal from the penalty spot in last weekend's 2-2 draw with Newcastle United at St James' Park.
