Liverpool's new midfielder James Milner admits that he had "frustrating" times during his five-year spell at Manchester City.

James Milner has admitted that he suffered a number of "frustrating" times at Manchester City before deciding to join Liverpool.

The England international signed for the Reds last month on a free transfer.

Manager Brendan Rodgers is likely to give the 29-year-old a more central midfield role following the departure of Steven Gerrard to MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy.

While looking back at his five-year spell at City, Milner admitted that at times he felt as though he was "unfairly" left out of the team.

"It was very frustrating at times during my career [at City]," The Express quotes Milner as saying. "I had some great times but there were ups and downs like there is in football. There were times when I felt like I could have done a job in midfield, but like I say, the manager makes the decision and it's no good for the team if I'm kicking up a fuss.

"It's about the team ultimately and we were successful in my five years there. I feel like I contributed there and there were times when I felt like I was left out of the team unfairly.

"I think you want a fair crack of the whip and if you're playing well, then you deserve to hold onto the shirt. If you're not playing well, then you don't deserve to be in the team."

Milner is in line for his Liverpool debut in today's pre-season match against Thailand All-Stars.
