Liverpool have become the first team in English football history to win 2,000 matches in the top flight courtesy of their 3-1 victory over Newcastle United this evening.

Jurgen Klopp's side fell behind to a shock Newcastle opener from Jonjo Shelvey early on at Anfield, but within 20 minutes they had turned the game around with a quickfire double.

Diogo Jota netted the equaliser in slightly controversial fashion to see Liverpool set a new all-time club record by scoring in a 32nd consecutive match.

Mohamed Salah then set another record of his own four minutes later, directly contributing to a goal for the 15th successive Premier League game by scoring his 15th of the season - something only Jamie Vardy has achieved before.

Liverpool continued to dominate possession but struggled to put the game to bed until Trent Alexander-Arnold unleashed a thunderbolt late on to seal all three points for title hopefuls.

The win is Liverpool's 2,000th in the top flight - an unprecedented milestone in English football and one which it has taken the Reds 4,227 games to reach.

The Merseysiders' record also includes 1,047 draws and 1,180 defeats, while Klopp was also able to celebrate a landmark of his own with his 150th Premier League win as manager of the club, reaching that tally in 12 games fewer than Sir Kenny Dalglish.

Liverpool, who were without Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones due to coronavirus, move back to within one point of leaders Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table as a result of their win. body check tags ::
