Liverpool set a new Premier League record after Darwin Nunez scored a stoppage-time winner in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Newcastle United.

The Reds experienced a disastrous first half, as Anthony Gordon gave Newcastle the lead in the 25th minute, before Virgil van Dijk was sent off just three minutes later.

It represented the first time that Liverpool have had a player red-carded in back-to-back Premier League games since March/April 2015, and it left Jurgen Klopp's side with a significant mountain to climb at St James Park.

Against all odds, Liverpool mounted a second-half turnaround, thanks to Nunez's third brace as a Liverpool player.

The Uruguayan equalised with just under 10 minutes remaining, before slotting home the winning goal in the third minute of stoppage time.

Not only did the 24-year-old secure all three points, his late winner helped the Reds break a Premier League record.

Nunez's winning strike was the 42nd Premier League goal scored by Liverpool in the 90th minute or later — the most by any team in the competition's history.

Klopp also enjoyed a record-breaking day after he recorded his 13th consecutive Premier League win against Eddie Howe, which is the longest winning run by one manager against an opposing manager in the competition's history.

The Liverpool boss admitted after the game that the dramatic victory was unlike any other match that he ever experienced during his managerial career.

Sunday's remarkable win extended Liverpool's unbeaten streak against Newcastle to 14 games — a run that stretches back to December 2015.

Having enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, the Merseyside club are sitting in fourth position after three matches.

They will now turn their attention to their final game before the international break, a home encounter against Aston Villa on Sunday. body check tags ::
