Modest Salah keeps goal celebrations low-key

The Liverpool forward opts for the understated approach when he scores a goal unlike some current and former stars.

Mo Salah celebrated his winning goal against Napoli on Tuesday night in typically understated fashion.

The Egyptian star had greeted a hat-trick against Bournemouth at the weekend in an equally low-key manner.

Here Press Association Sport takes a look at how Salah’s modest celebrations compare to the over-the-top antics of some other football stars.

The greatest showman

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored some stunning goals during his career and the Portuguese goal machine, now at Juventus, has always delivered a flamboyant goal celebration to match. Known as the ‘Si’ celebration, he jumps in the air and dramatically poses for the fans, with his name on clear display.

Bale not shy to celebrate

Gareth Bale’s hand gestures when celebrating have become a familiar sight (Nick Potts/PA)

Ronaldo’s former Real Madrid team-mate Gareth Bale is modesty personified off the pitch, but the Welsh superstar is not shy when it comes to celebrating a spectacular strike. The former Spurs winger even trademarked his celebration, made by forming a heart with his fingers, which is believed to be dedicated to his partner.

Gazza gets ‘dentist chair’ treatment

Paul Gascoigne is swamped by England team-mates after his wonder goal against Scotland at Euro 96 (Neil Munns/PA)

Paul Gascoigne was never shy full-stop. His “dentist chair” treatment by England team-mates after his sublime effort against Scotland at Wembley during Euro 96 must be one of the most famous goal celebrations of all. It came after a night out in the lead-up to the tournament, when a drinking session ended with players being doused in alcohol while sat in a dentist’s chair, which was then replicated with water on the pitch.

Bullard takes the mickey

Jimmy Bullard celebrates a goal for Hull by mocking his manager Phil Brown (Martin Rickett/PA)

Jimmy Bullard is another notorious mickey-taker and this celebration after his equaliser for Hull at Manchester City in 2009 replicates manager Phil Brown’s infamous on-pitch half-time team-talk at the same venue the season before. It was all taken in good jest by Brown, who applauded Bullard’s sense of humour.

Crouch revels in ‘robot’ dance

Peter Crouch performs his ‘robot’ dance after scoring for England against Hungary at Old Trafford in 2006 (Gareth Copley/PA)

Peter Crouch became famous for his amusing on-field dance moves and the 6ft 7in striker did not let England fans down at Old Trafford in 2006 when scoring his side’s third goal in a 3-1 win against Hungary. He performed it again against Jamaica days later before dusting if off 11 years later, playing for Stoke. In the celebration, Crouch attempts to move his upper body in a mechanical fashion but was happy to admit he was not very good at it.
