Mohamed Salah closing in on Robbie Fowler goalscoring record

Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah could match or better Robbie Fowler's record Premier League goal haul for the Reds when they meet Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Egypt international has not enjoyed as prolific a campaign as he has previously in a Liverpool shirt, but he still has 18 goals to boast from 32 appearances in all competitions.

Eight of those strikes have come in the Premier League, and he ended a five-game goal drought in the top flight by opening the scoring in Monday's Merseyside derby win over Everton.

Salah took advantage of some questionable positioning by Jordan Pickford to tap home in the first half, before Cody Gakpo's first Reds goal sealed a 2-0 victory for Jurgen Klopp's team.

By netting in Monday's derby, Salah recorded his 128th goal in the Premier League - 126 for Liverpool and a further two during his underwhelming spell at Chelsea.

Fowler is the current leading Premier League goalscorer for Liverpool with 128 goals, and a brace for Salah at St James' Park would therefore see him equal the Englishman's long-standing record.

Should the 30-year-old manage to claim a hat-trick on Saturday, he would become Liverpool's highest Premier League goalscorer of all time, although the Reds are facing a Newcastle side boasting the best defence in the league.

Fowler's overall record is not the only one in Salah's sights ahead of Saturday's game, as the Egyptian is only one away from equalling the Englishman's record for the most left-footed goals in Premier League history.

Fowler netted 105 Premier League goals with his left foot down the years, while Salah - who poked home with his right boot against Everton - currently sits on 104 such efforts.

The former Basel and Roma man now has a total of 174 strikes and 70 assists to boast from his 286 matches for Liverpool, while Fowler racked up 183 goals in 369 games for the Merseyside giants.

Back in August, Liverpool inflicted Newcastle's first and only defeat of the top-flight campaign so far, coming from behind to win 2-1 at Anfield thanks to Fabio Carvalho's last-gasp goal.

Since that defeat, Newcastle have strung together a 17-game unbeaten run in the Premier League under Eddie Howe, rising into fourth place in the table as a result.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are languishing in ninth spot after failing to win any of their first four league games of 2023, but Jurgen Klopp's side have not lost any of their last five league games at St James' Park.

The Reds will remain without Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz and Thiago Alcantara for the trip to Newcastle, while Calvin Ramsay has undergone season-ending surgery on a knee injury.

However, Arthur could potentially make his Premier League debut after recovering from thigh surgery, while Virgil van Dijk is also expected to be fit enough to start the match after making the bench against Everton. body check tags ::
