Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain believes that his side made a "statement" by becoming the first team to beat Manchester City in the Premier League this term.

Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has said that he is pleased with the "statement" his side made by becoming the first Premier League team to beat Manchester City this season.

Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring at Anfield to set the tempo for a thrilling contest which saw Liverpool almost throw away a 4-1 lead before eventually holding out for a 4-3 triumph.

Three of Liverpool's goals came within an eight-minute spell during the second half, and Oxlade-Chamberlain believes that City's similar style played into the hands of Liverpool.

"We know they like to play out from the back and they are really good at it, but at the same time we thrive when teams try and do that, it can play into our hands," Oxlade-Chamberlain told Sky Sports News.

"Second half when we went on a bit of a rampage for five or 10 minutes that showed. It's a nice statement to make.

"They've been brilliant all year. We knew we had what it took if we were 100% at the races to get three points today."

In addition to ending Man City's hopes of an unbeaten season, the result also saw Liverpool climb above Chelsea into third in the Premier League table.
