Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers admits that the club face a "big summer" after they ended their campaign with a 6-1 humiliation against Stoke City.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has conceded that the club face a "big summer" after they suffered their worst loss for 52 years against Stoke City on Sunday.

In a game that marked Steven Gerrard's 710th and final appearance for the Reds, Rodgers's side were humiliated by a 6-1 hammering at the Britannia Stadium.

Despite signing Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli last summer, and Fabio Borini in his first transfer window back in 2012, Rodgers chose a lineup without a recognised striker after dropping makeshift forward Raheem Sterling, and the Northern Irishman has warned that the Reds face a transfer window of major upheaval.

He told reporters: "We finish in sixth position, which is where we deserve to finish. It's a big, big summer ahead. We lose Steven after today and you've seen again his inspiration in the team to get a goal. We've got a hell of a lot of work to do.

"I think it's clear, you look at our goals over the course of the season and [the lack of goals] has been the major contributing factor. I've had to look at different ideas and different ways to make the team create and score more.

"We've taken our beating today. Stoke were better than us, especially in that first half."

The Liverpool boss also apologised to the club's supporters for the heavy defeat.
