Brendan Rodgers dismisses Tottenham Hotspur comparison

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers dismisses suggestions that his club are replicating the transfer strategy adopted by Tottenham Hotspur after the exit of Gareth Bale.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that it was always the intention of the Merseyside club to strengthen the depth of their squad during the summer.

The Reds have made six summer signings after losing Luis Suarez to Barcelona, but Rodgers, who guided Liverpool to second place in the Premier League last season, has rejected suggestions that the Anfield outfit are repeating the strategy that Spurs employed after the departure of Gareth Bale.

The 41-year-old told reporters: "We are a different club and it's a different vision that we have here. There is a strategy behind what we are doing. We were talking with the recruitment team last season and we knew that we needed to improve the depth of our squad.

"Last season, we weren't strong enough in depth in numbers and quality so we were always earmarked in the summer to bring in a number of players, hoping that we were in the Champions League so that we could try to challenge on all fronts.

"The players that we have brought in have a clear profile of the role that we want them to play and we see them as players who can develop in the future as well."

Liverpool have spent nearly £80m during the end-of-season break, but the majority of that outlay has been offset by the £75m recouped from the sale of Suarez.
