New Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has revealed that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers convinced him to move to the Liberty Stadium.
The 21-year-old, who completed a £5m move to the Swans yesterday, has claimed that the Reds did not push him out the door.
"Brendan said he wouldn't let me go to a club that wasn't right for me," the South Wales Evening Post quotes Shelvey as saying. "He said Swansea were perfect for me because of the way they play.
"He couldn't guarantee me the first-team football I wanted at Liverpool, and he said that if I could get the game-time at Swansea then I should definitely go. I could have stayed at Liverpool and fought for my place — they didn't want to get rid of me.
"But I felt in the end I needed to come and try to make a name for myself in the game rather than sitting on the bench every week at Liverpool. I needed to come and try to play and I just hope to enjoy my football."
Shelvey penned a four-year deal at the Welsh outfit.
