Liverpool criticised in latest racism row

The head of European football's anti-racism group urges Liverpool to be more proactive in the latest racism row to hit the club.

Liverpool have been criticised by the Piara Powar, the head of European football's anti-racism group, over their lack of action in the latest racism row to hit the club.

Both Liverpool Football Club and Merseyside police have launched investigations into the alleged abuse of 20-year-old defender Tom Adeyemi during the FA Cup third round match between Liverpool and Oldham.

However, Powar believes that the club should be more proactive in their handling of the situation.

"The obvious thing for LFC today must be to come out as a club - owner, manager, captain - and start to undo some of the damage, including addressing their fans," he wrote on Twitter.

"Go onto the LFC website and there is not a single expression of regret about what happened last night. Are LFC fans going to do this at every game, support the mistakes made by their own man by abusing others? 25% of PL players are black.

"That's a lot of players to abuse. Top clubs have unprecedented influence and power over millions of people. They should exercise that power responsibly, if they don't it's time for the authorities to step in."

Liverpool have continually been at the centre of the racism row this season, with striker Luis Suarez being hit with an eight match ban for his comments to Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
