Burnley have sealed their first ever Premier League win over Liverpool in the form of a 2-0 victory at Turf Moor this afternoon.

Sam Vokes got on the scoresheet inside two minutes of the clash, while Andre Gray doubled the lead for the hosts eight minutes before half time against a Liverpool team that struggled to find a way through, despite having 22 shots on goal compared to Burnley's three.

It was the perfect start for Sean Dyche's side when Vokes put the Clarets ahead, sealing his first goal in 28 top-flight appearances and Burnley's first in four Premier League matches against Liverpool.

The Wales international picked the ball up from Andre Gray before turning on the edge of the box and hammering it past Simon Mignolet and into the back of the net.

With their tails up, Burnley came close to another goal two minutes later when Gray charged towards the box and set himself up for a shot, but Dejan Lovren put in a well-timed tackle to deny him.

After conceding early, Jurgen Klopp's side began chasing the game and they had the majority of possession in the first half, with Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino trying to find ways through a packed Burnley half.

Daniel Sturridge, who missed last weekend's season opener against Arsenal with a hip injury, produced a handful of shots from distance in the first half, but every one of those missed the target,

Coutinho also tried to get the Reds on level terms with two 25-yard curling attempts, but both, which were taken in quick succession, sent the ball high over the crossbar.

Many times during the match, Ben Mee was the first to cut out crosses delivered into the box by the Reds, while goalkeeper Tom Heaton made a few comfortable saves, one of which was to stop Lallana after he turned on the edge of the box before shooting.

Another attempt from Lallana was produced from a short corner, which resulted in the midfielder cutting inside and going for glory just on the outside of the penalty area, but the ball deflected into Heaton's hands.

After more than half an hour on the back foot, Burnley doubled their lead when club-record signing Steven Defour on his debut led a counter-attack by snatching the ball back from Liverpool in the middle of the park.

The Belgium international then fed the ball through to Gray, who evaded challenges from Jordan Henderson and Ragnar Klavan to send a low drive into the corner of the far post.

Sturridge had an early sight of goal after the half-time break when an attempted headed clearance from Burnley fell to the striker's feet, but the England international dragged his low shot wide of the post.

Liverpool continued to dominate the ball, with Burnley seemingly content to sit back and counter-attack, and Heaton had a few saves to make.

Some link-up play between Sturridge and Georginio Wijnaldum ended in the latter teeing the ball up for Coutinho, whose first-time shot was sent straight into Heaton's hands.

A few minutes later, Heaton had another stop to make but it was not as comfortable - Firmino aimed a 30-yard shot for the top corner, but the keeper managed to get across to push the ball clear.

Some sloppiness from Liverpool almost resulted in a third goal for Burnley when Matthew Lowton nicked the ball back and squared it to Gray, who fired with his left foot but the ball curled wide.

The hosts looked threatening on the break, while Liverpool were continuously on the front foot and Marko Grujic almost made an instant impact coming off the bench by shooting from the edge of the area, but Heaton tipped the ball over the bar.

Burnley managed to see out the game without any real scares, and took all three points from a frustrated Liverpool side.
