Former coach: 'Philippe Coutinho wants to fulfil ambitions with Liverpool'

A former coach of Philippe Coutinho says that the Barcelona-linked midfielder is aiming to become one of the world's best players at Liverpool.

Philippe Coutinho has no intention of leaving Liverpool and instead wants to remain at the club until he achieves his ambition of winning the Premier League title, according to his former youth coach.

The Brazil international, named the Reds' Player of the Season in successive years since joining from Inter Milan, has been linked with a £65m switch to Barcelona next summer.

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have also shown a reported interest in the 24-year-old, but Rodney Gama - who worked with Coutinho during his formative years at Vasco da Gama - is adamant that the attacking ace will remain in place at Anfield.

"His ambition is to be in the list of the top 10 players [in the world]," he told The Telegraph. "Whenever we speak, he always says that he is very happy at Liverpool and his biggest challenge is to win the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool.

"He knows that if he continues to give great performances for Liverpool, he will always be selected for Brazil. Coutinho can be compared to Neymar, but Coutinho is Coutinho.

"He can become a very popular in Brazil and around the world like Neymar, he just needs to get a sequence of games in the Brazilian squad. There is pressure on him but it is not a problem. He plays at a big club and plays in the most important league in the world."

Coutinho, under contract on Merseyside until 2020, has scored six goals and produced five assists for Liverpool in all competitions this term.
